The oven igniter is the most commonly replaced part on gas ranges. It glows to open the gas safety valve, then ignites the gas. When it weakens (they degrade over time), it can't draw enough current to open the valve, so the oven won't heat. Warning sign: if the igniter glows orange for more than 90 seconds without the gas lighting, it's failing. You may also smell gas briefly. This flat-style igniter fits most GE, Kenmore, and Hotpoint gas ranges. Installation requires removing the oven bottom panel.
